How to Create a Strong Password and Remember It Safely

A strong password is long, random, and used for one account only. Your name, birthday, phone number and simple words are not strong, even with a number at the end, because those are the first things an attacker tries.

Step by step

1. Open the Password Generator. 2. Choose a length of at least 16 characters for an important account. 3. Keep uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers and symbols turned on. 4. Generate a password, copy it, and paste it where it is needed. 5. Save it at once in your own password manager, or in the password manager built into your phone or browser. 6. Never send it to anyone, never write it on a photo, and never reuse it for another account.

How to remember it without writing it down badly

You do not need to memorise a random password. That is what a password manager is for. If you must remember one master password, make it a long phrase you can picture, with a mix of words, numbers and a symbol, and keep it private. Turn on two-step verification for email and banking wherever it is offered, because even a strong password is safer with a second step.
